RADIO SHOW

One year ago today painter, banjo player and Grammy-winning music historian, Art Sparks Rosenbaum, passed away. I wrote this song after a season of modeling for him and his students in his Athens studio. A spiral stair linked the upper and lower levels. It was the only time I've ever been drawn from so many different levels, angles, and perspectives at once. The effect, for me, was centrifugal. I felt myself drawn into into their version of my gesture, their take on my mood, their revelation of my energy. He and his artists did not realize that they had become muses to the muse.
That's how this song happened.

“There is a definite bridge between sound and skin. I am discovering that the bridge is infinite.”
You remember the band by her name, Lily Herne. At that time, Bulldog 93.3fm said, “they play music that is not in a category”. Neither are dreams.
After the band’s European Tour, they pinned the butterfly Dreamrock. Out of a night-foundered genre, the band became Dreamlily.
Lily models for the University of Georgia by day. By night, she dreamrocks. At the Georgia Museum Samurai Exhibition, Japan’s Consul General invited Dreamlily to perform his Atlanta Sayonara Concert. In this way, live music opened for Lily through her silent and still work as a model.
“September 6th is a special show because there is no roof between my music and the sky. Perhaps the Rooftop lifts us closer to Art Rosenbaum, Rest in Peace.”
Professor Rosenbaum said goodbye one year ago, September 4, 2022. His historical murals remain in museums all over the country and as close as The Globe across the street. A Grammy-winning folklorist who developed his own style of banjo playing, his painting bridged music and time.
Dreamlily will release “Spiral Stair” on Sepember 4 with footage from Art’s studio on his spiral staircase.
“I posed on that stairway for several hours. It felt like a lucid dream. His artists were above and below me, drawing from every point of view. Rosenbaum urged us on and let us create. His paint and his presence gave us a classroom, a stairway, a city, and a cosmos.”
In his own words: “It’s really about a quest, and I wanted to make the city not look like an ancient city - and also have someone recording, someone singing and someone videoing - just to show that this is not a storybook view of the past. . . .It’s the past and present. We’re in the TIME FLOW....”
Honoring Art Rosenbaum with songs like “Days of 1974” and “Baker Island”, Dreamlily invites you into the time flow above the town.
“It is still yesterday on Baker Island, It is tomorrow in the back of my mind...In the back of my mind I am back to back with Heaven.”
Valentine Mix
When he died, I dropped everything to go back to his song.
That was in September. I’m still mixing, but it’s almost complete!

I wrote Spiral Stair in 2012 after a night at his two-story gallery, posing on the spiral staircase for thirty artists.
It was the first time I ever posed nude for an audience outside of a classroom.
That’s when my naked body became an inseparable part of my music.
He didn’t know that. I never told him.
When he talks about his paintings, he mentions the public scene. Then he pits it against the private moment.
Behind a window, there is a naked couple on a patchwork quilt. He said, “We live our intimate lives and sometimes something pretty disturbing is happening right outside the window.”
During the years I worked for him, I was behind the window.
I wrote his song behind the window.
And I’m mixing it now, in my bathroom, behind the window.
Modeling by day, dreamrocking by night, this is my life. My routine persists as it did when he was alive. It is difficult to return to the hallways and galleries every day for work, knowing he is not there, he will not be there ever again. He was my favorite. In fact, he was my muse.
I don’t think he ever realized that our roles were reversed. I was too shy to play my song for him.
…Strange how a song can be more naked than a bare body.

I heard a seven year-old girl say
~~~The light will blind you and the dark will not let you see~~~
Then she giggled. I thought it must be a riddle.
So I wrote a new song by the light of the christmas tree.
And we filmed it by the wonderlights.
We have not become better with words in time. The original meanings have eroded under the sloppy modern tongue. This is why I like to trace a word back in time. Exhibitionism, for instance. Medicine/Medical Obsolete. administration, as of a remedy.
…Sidenote from Lily…
It seems obvious to incorporate a snake into the visuals for this one. But what is a snake really?
I sing a lot about the Garden of Eden, but not about the Snake. I guess that Snake didn’t like being left out because it showed up on set in our Adirondack Eden. The cameraman was too far away to zoom into the tree, but the serpent was right there, and my “Other Eve” was freaking out. This excerpt from Lotus is usually locked inside the Angelogic gallery. I’m sharing Two Eves with you now because you’re in my greenroom, and nothing is greener than Eden.
